The Road to the 2013 Kentucky Derby intensifies this weekend with the launch of the second chapter of the new points based system the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The first chapter called the Kentucky Derby Prep Season consisted of 19 races across the United States and one in Europe. 10-4-2-1 points were given to the top four finishers respectively. The top two qualifiers sit at 24 points. View the current standings.
The second chapter called the Kentucky Derby Championship Series consists of three phases with the first including eight races. Two of those eight races are set to run this weekend at Gulfstream Park and the Fair Grounds. These eight races will give 50-20-10-5 points respectively to the top four finishers. That means, the top two finishers of these races will thrust themselves to the top or near the top of the current standings. That’s how important each race moving forward will be for the hopes of each horse to qualify for the Kentucky Derby.
